A Witness to Growth at Magruder

A Witness to Growth at Magruder

5/11/2018

There is something sacred about nurturing something, no matter at what stage, when you see it grow beyond the place it began. We go in hoping to help one thing happen, and often those efforts result in more than we anticipated. At camp, I have seen faith bud and flower in ways I could not have guessed--and at that point they are far more beautiful than anything I could have just cooked up on my own.

Since the last mention of the Gray Family Foundation 2 for 1 matching grant program at Magruder just over a month ago, you have helped us raise $3,490 for maintenance projects at Camp Magruder! Putting my math skills to the test, that not only put us well over the halfway mark (68%!), but leaves us with just $5,615 to raise before September!

Youth Amity Deters' Report from Leader Training Program

I’ve been going to camp since third grade and the memories I’ve made are some of my favorites. I’ve always had a great camp experience and a lot of that was because of my counselors and the people in leadership roles. I remember my counselors always making sure I felt included and welcomed during camp. They made sure I stayed safe and had fun.

Magruder's Hospitality Discovers Richness in Diversity

3/28/2018

What are we offering to guests that is more meaningful than just a hotel?  I ask myself that, too.  Those questions can spiral for me.  They begin to point to something else.  Why do we feel compelled to sing around the fire?  Will these meals nourish more than just our bodies?

Early in August, the cross had stood at the ocean beach for a long time went missing. While it was not the original, this cross had a great deal of sentimental value to many. Needless to say the loss was disappointing.

What are the 7 Foundations of Camp & Retreat Ministries?

3/16/2017

The 7 Foundations of United Methodist Camp and Retreat Ministries (nationally, UMCRM) began with a prayerful discernment centered on two specific questions:

What must we do well in order to be truly effective now and into the future?
What is absolutely vital for us to focus on in fulfilling the church’s mission within the unique camp and retreat setting?

UMCOR Kit Camp Recap

11/10/2016

Sixteen women from the OR/ID Annual Conference spent a glorious fall weekend at Camp Magruder sewing school bags and layette items for the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) Depot in Salt Lake City (UMCOR West). It was the Conference’s second annual “Kit Kamp,” so named because the items made will find their way into some of the Depot’s seven “kits” that are used in disaster relief situations worldwide.

Let's Go Camping!

Let's Go Camping!

You ever wonder where we got the name for our newsletter and website? The name of this camp brochure from 1952 gives us a clue! Brochures like this were a very creative way for campers to learn about and register for camp. Furthermore, with the camp stamp books that churches received in the mail, potential campers could also earn their own way to camp by purchasing stamps, which they affixed to the book.

Get the Go Camping Logo on Land’s End Merchandise

4/13/2016

Visit business.landsend.com/store/gocamping/ to have the Camp and Retreat Ministries logo embroidered on any number of clothing or other items that Land’s End offers.  You can order one piece at a time, in the size and color you wish.  There is also an option to vary the colors of embroidery threads to be better visible on the material you choose (you could even choose pink, purple and orange!). The National Camp and Retreat logo is also available.  The logo fee is typically about $6.00 in addition to the price of the clothing article, but often coupon codes can be found with an online search that may eliminate this or the shipping charge.

In Memory: Allen Crooch

In Memory: Allen Crooch

3/10/2016

Allen Crooch was the founding member/attendee of Camp Hope, an event at Camp Magruder for adults who are differently-abled. Years ago, Allen approached his father, Dee, saying, "I want a church camp for people like me" (he had already attended a non-church camp). Dee then went to Margaret Golden and said "can we do this?"  Margaret then figured out how to make it happen. Every year at Camp Hope's Communion service this story is shared to honor Allen, and to remind attendees that their voice matters and that their ideas are taken seriously.
